Social Media Content Strategy: How to Save Time by Legally Using Other People’s Content

The content is engaging in the sense that you can help them solve a problem or achieve a goal, or help them learn more about how to use your products/services to benefit themselves.

Perhaps you are thinking – wait, if I share an article or document or resource from another site – won’t that mean I’ll just lose that visitor (potential customer) to the other website? My clients have asked me the same thing.

The answer is NO! You’ll still keep them as visitors and potential customers. The reason is because you are training them to start seeing you as the resource they go to if they want help in your company’s field/expertise. Think about a newspaper for example – often times, they’ll get articles from other writers or magazines, etc. People may visit the websites of those writers or magazines, etc. However, at the end of the day, people will still come back to the newspaper for additional information on that topic since they know that the newspaper will provide them with the up to date information. This is what you are training your visitors to also do with any social media content that you provide – view you as the source of expertise and information.

You would then save your time and distinguish your company as follow:

  1. Take the heading from the article and use this as your blog post title or the first sentence in your Facebook status update or Tweet.
  2. Read through the article/resource – find the key 1-3 points – put these as the first few sentences of your blog post/status update/Tweet. The reason you want to do this is so that for people who are short on time – they can quickly get the main points just when they first read your content. Then, if they want more details, they’ll continue reading. This can be thought of as the “hook” for the readers.
  3. Provide your analysis of the key points that you’ve just shown – this is where it’s really important. Someone has already gone out and gather the facts for you – you just need to analyze it.
  4. For your social media content, In a paragraph or two for blog posts and a few sentences for status updates – provide your thoughts on what this means to your customers – to help them solve their problems or achieve their goals. Really – you are answering the question of, “SO WHAT?” of you providing the key points
  5. Conclude with the link to the original article to give the author credit and to ensure that you aren’t illegally stealing someone’s content.
